Trump unveils luxury Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar as temporary Air Force One

One person was killed and dozens injured after two trains collided north of London. Emergency services declared a major incident as investigations into the crash continue.

US President Donald Trump on Friday unveiled a modified Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar that will temporarily serve as Air Force One, offering reporters and officials a first look inside the aircraft that is expected to carry the president until a new fleet arrives from Boeing.

The luxury jet, formerly owned by the Qatari government, has undergone extensive modifications to meet presidential requirements. According to reports, the aircraft will act as a transitional platform while the United States awaits the delivery of new Air Force One planes currently scheduled for 2028.

Trump said he intends to use the aircraft during next month’s NATO summit in Ankara and hinted at a possible future visit to China. He also indicated that his return from the recent G7 summit marked his final scheduled trip aboard the current Air Force One.

A larger and more luxurious presidential aircraft

It is evident that this new aircraft can be recognized through its newly redesigned external features. This includes a navy blue bottom body, an addition of a red strip, a bigger American flag located at the tail end of the aircraft and a presidential seal located just beside the boarding door.

The aircraft has been described by journalists who toured the aircraft as bigger than the present Air Force One.According to Daily Caller reporter Reagan Reese, the interior feels “more like a house than a plane,” featuring wood-finished tables, lounge areas, conference spaces, upgraded seating and fully reclining beds.

The aircraft also includes a larger press section, expanded meeting areas and redesigned passenger cabins aimed at improving comfort during long-haul international travel.

Gift sparks political and ethical debate

The aircraft’s acceptance has also drawn scrutiny from critics and ethics experts. Questions have been raised about the implications of accepting such an expensive gift from a foreign government, even though the administration has maintained that the aircraft serves a national purpose.

Speaking about the decision, Trump said the United States needed to be represented properly while waiting for Boeing’s delayed presidential aircraft programme.

The US Air Force said the aircraft underwent extensive security and operational modifications before entering service. According to previous Air Force estimates, the upgrades cost less than $400 million.

Trump has also stated that the aircraft will eventually be transferred to a future presidential archive rather than remain in personal use after his presidency.

Bridge aircraft until 2028

The Boeing 747 is expected to remain in service as a temporary Air Force One until Boeing completes delivery of the next-generation presidential aircraft fleet.

The unveiling marks a significant transition for the presidential air transport programme and signals the approaching retirement of the iconic aircraft that has served multiple US administrations over the years.
