President Donald Trump attended the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Friday night, months after a shooting at the original April event forced an evacuation and left the annual gathering in disarray.
Opening his remarks, Trump referenced the postponed event, saying, “As I said three months ago, the show must go on.” The president received polite applause before sitting through awards recognising journalists, including several honoured for reporting critical of his administration.

Why was the Correspondents’ Dinner rescheduled?
The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) postponed its annual dinner after a gunman stormed a security checkpoint during the original event in April, triggering panic and an evacuation.

Addressing the audience, WHCA President Weijia Jiang acknowledged the trauma surrounding the earlier incident.
“Let’s try this again,” Jiang said before adding, “Tonight our message is this: We are back. We will not be intimidated. We refuse to let an act of violence have the final word.”
The dinner was moved to the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C., with tighter security measures, including multiple identity checks, armed officers, security dogs and a scaled-back guest list of around 700 attendees.
Did Trump change the tone of his speech?
Trump had earlier hinted he might revive the “rather nasty” remarks he had planned before the April event was interrupted. However, he struck a different tone while still taking aim at sections of the media.
“This is really the largest group of ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’ people put together at one time,” he said, drawing laughter from parts of the audience.
The evening was also a tribute to Secret Service Agent Victor Gonzales, who had sustained injuries in the wake of the April attack, in addition to members of staff of the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was initially organised.
Although the organisers were said to have called it a celebration of journalism and the First Amendment, controversies concerning the dinner remained. Ethicists on media and defenders of press freedom stated that the event is indicative of the too close a friendship journalists have with the officials they cover.
