According to reports, Gandhi questioned the representation of Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Dalits and other backward communities at the event. During his speech, he referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan while making his argument about social representation.

The Congress leader alleged that communities comprising a large section of India’s population were not adequately represented during the ceremony.

Political reactions follow the remarks

The BJP criticised Rahul Gandhi’s comments, accusing him of making derogatory references to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The party’s Karnataka unit shared earlier clips of Gandhi’s speeches on social media while attacking his remarks.

Singer Sona Mohapatra also criticised Gandhi, questioning the use of women in political speeches and calling his comments about Aishwarya Rai inappropriate.

In a post on X, she said political leaders should avoid making demeaning references to women while addressing public rallies.

The Congress leader has not issued any clarification specifically regarding the criticism over his remarks about the actor.
