Emraan Hashmi’s 2007 cult favourite Awarapan is reportedly returning to theatres, just ahead of its much-awaited sequel, Awarapan 2.
Reportedly, the re-release is planned for July 31, 2026, about two weeks before the sequel hits cinemas.
The idea seems to be to cash in on the original film’s lasting popularity, as Awarapan has always been loved for its emotional story, powerful performances, and a soundtrack that remains popular even today, while also building buzz ahead of the sequel’s release.

However, if this release date is confirmed, Awarapan will end up competing at the box office with Tom Holland and Zendaya’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is releasing around the same time.
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, Awarapan is expected to return to cinemas on July 31, 2026, giving fans a chance to revisit the film before Awarapan 2 arrives on the big screen.
If confirmed, the re-release will come nearly two decades after the original premiered in 2007 and slowly built a cult following over the years.
Why bring It back now?
A source quoted by the portal explained that the film continues to have strong recall value, pointing to its casting, subject matter, emotional moments, and especially its “timeless music score.” The source added that this was the reason it was decided to release it in cinemas ahead of Awarapan 2.
This isn’t a new trend, several Bollywood films have been re-released in theatres right before their sequels launch.
It’s a strategy that lets old fans relive the film on the big screen while also introducing the story to a younger audience who may have missed it the first time around.
A clash with Spider-Man
If the July 31 date holds, Awarapan will share its opening weekend with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya.
The Marvel film is expected to dominate screens globally, but Awarapan could still pull in audiences thanks to nostalgia, its popular soundtrack, and Emraan Hashmi’s loyal fan base.
Not your usual box office battle
This won’t be a typical clash between two new releases. Instead, it’ll be a beloved Bollywood re-release going up against one of Hollywood’s biggest superhero franchises, making for an interesting weekend at the box office.
