Adventure sports are no longer just an add on to a holiday, they have become the main reason people travel.

From scaling mountains to jumping off cliffs, more and more people are chasing thrilling experiences, and this rising interest is what is pushing adventure tourism forward across the country.

If you are planning an adventure trip yourself, it helps to understand how this trend picked up in India, what is fuelling its growth, and which destinations offer what kind of adventure sports.

Niharika Nigam, managing director of Jumpin Heights, shared her insights on all of this, from why more Indians are choosing adventure holidays to the activities, age groups and places leading this trend.

Why more Indians are choosing adventure holidays

Adventure tourism is not a new idea, but according to Nigam, it has grown massively over the last decade.

Earlier, thrilling activities were often squeezed in as a last minute add on during a trip. Now, they are the main reason people are travelling in the first place.

She said, “Travellers have started chasing experiences over sightseeing, gravitating toward adventure activities like treks, river rafting, high altitude expeditions, and once niche activities like bungee jumping and zip lining.”

Instead of planning trips only around monuments and sightseeing spots, travellers are now looking for activities that challenge them physically and bring them closer to nature.

Nigam believes social media has played a huge role in this shift. She said, “A single well shot reel can turn an underrated town into a bucket list destination almost overnight.”

Apart from social media, she also pointed out that better road connectivity, an increase in licensed and professional operators, stricter safety standards, and falling costs have all contributed to this growing interest.

Which age groups are trying adventure sports

It is easy to assume that adventure sports only appeal to the young, but that is not entirely true. While younger travellers do form the biggest chunk of this crowd, older adults are joining in as well.

According to Nigam, the 18 to 35 age group remains the core consumer, made up largely of young adults and college students trying activities like bungee jumping, zip lining or trekking for the very first time.

She said people between 35 and 50 are also getting involved, largely due to higher disposable income and a growing interest in wellness focused travel.

Even travellers above 50 are stepping into adventure tourism, though in a more relaxed way. Nigam said this age group prefers nature focused and slower activities like kayaking or guided treks. This shows that adventure tourism today appeals to almost every age group, not just the young.

Which adventure sports are the most popular

Trekking is one of the easiest activities for beginners to start with. It needs very little equipment and offers everything from casual weekend trails to longer, multi day Himalayan treks.

Bungee jumping has also built a loyal fan base over the years. With certified operators now offering proper guidance and safety measures, more people are willing to try it.

River rafting is another favourite, with Rishikesh being one of the biggest hubs for it. It caters to different skill levels, offering Grade II rapids for beginners and Grade IV rapids for more experienced rafters.

Paragliding is also gaining popularity, especially in places like Bir Billing and Kamshet, which are known for tandem flights that let beginners try the activity without needing any prior training.
