What we found
Practical testing and customer usage indicate that Airtel’s mobile hotspot feature continued to function normally. Users were able to share mobile data from their smartphones with laptops, tablets and secondary smartphones without encountering any technical restriction.

“Being a regular Airtel user, I have not yet faced such issues as being claimed on social media,” said Adrija, 21, an Airtel subscriber from Kolkata
Importantly, the hotspot functionality remained operational even when the now-discussed clause was part of Airtel’s Unlimited 5G Data terms and conditions. No independently verified demonstrations, customer recordings or technical reports established that Airtel had actually disabled or blocked hotspot access for regular subscribers.
The absence of verifiable evidence suggests that the viral claim overstated what the written clause actually meant in practice.
“Most of my work happens through hotspot, considering I travel mostly in my domain of work. Hotspot access has not been an issue, being an Airtel user,” explains Manjeet, 28, a Delhi-based subscriber of the network.
Airtel has since removed the specific hotspot-related wording from the terms governing its Unlimited 5G Data offer.
The removal, however, has not resulted in any visible change in user experience. Customers continue to use the hotspot feature in the same manner as before, reinforcing the finding that there was no implemented restriction affecting regular users.
