On Wednesday, the fact-checking unit of the Press Information Bureau debunked all such claims and termed the social media rumors as “false”. In a post on X, PIB Fact Check clarified that the RBI is not replacing paper currency with plastic notes.
PIB’s fact-checking unit said in the post, “According to RBI, there are no plans to withdraw paper currency notes or replace them with plastic currency notes by June 30, 2026”.
A video posted by the body on X shows Rs. 200, Rs. 100, Rs. 50, and Rs. 10 currency notes. The video also features a Hindi caption and a background sound that seems to be a speech by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The fact-checking unit termed the video “digitally altered”.

RBI has not announced withdrawal of paper currency, PIB clarifies
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has clarified that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not issued any directive regarding the withdrawal of paper currency notes, amid claims circulating on social media and other digital platforms.
Official sources have confirmed that the central bank has not issued any announcement on the matter. Authorities have also clarified that existing paper currency notes will continue to remain in circulation, Hindustan Times reported.

PIB advises public to verify information
PIB urged people to rely only on the official RBI website for authentic information and avoid sharing unverified claims.
The fact-checking unit also asked citizens to always “verify” information before forwarding it on social media or messaging platforms.
It further appealed to users to report suspicious content related to the Government of India to @PIBFactCheck.
