The Maharashtra Cyber police has recently registered a case in connection with a deepfake video of a deputy commissioner with the Delhi Police, which had the caption, “I am resigning from service.”
The video was also shared by several Congress leaders and supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

Reality of the video
The video reportedly depicts DCP Sumit Jha, who talks about resigning “immediately”. He claimed that the government expected him to address the media and lie about the protesting students. He could also speaking in support of the protesters, in the video.
The video depicted the DCP saying, ” These students are not terrorists, they are the future of our nation. I joined the police force to stand with the truth, not to peddle lies. I can’t be a part of what the government is trying to do. From today, I am not with the government, but I stand with these students.”
The complainant is Nikhil Bhambre, who works with the social media team of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is related to the Delhi government. The video was later confirmed to be deepfake, with Press Information Bureau (PIB) confirming that it was AI-generated.

Actions taken
An FIR has been registered by the Maharashtra Cyber Police, which states that the case has been registered as the video has been shared without verification to create confusion in the minds of the public.
An officer with the Cyber Police said, “We have registered a case against unknown persons under sections 353 of statements amounting to public mischief of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and 66 D for cheating by impersonation of the Information Technology Act,” as per Hindustan Times.
