Iran deal done, Ukraine next? Trump shifts from Iran deal to Ukraine peace push

US President Donald Trump joined Group of Seven (G7) leaders on Monday at the summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, where he cast a preliminary agreement on Iran as a major diplomatic win and said he would now try to end the fighting in Ukraine and Lebanon.

The summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the lakeside resort, brought together leaders whose talks are being shaped as much by the Middle East ceasefire effort as by broader unease over Trump’s foreign policy, tariff threats, and hardline language on immigration.

The Gulf gambit gathers steam

In comments alongside Macron, Trump said a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war in the Gulf had already been signed by the United States and Iran, although he was unclear on when the text would be released.

He also said some ships were already traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas supplies that Iran had effectively shut down, and claimed they would now pass “toll-free.”

Many leaders welcomed the possibility of closure to the Iran conflict, but their relief was tempered by concern over Trump’s new tariff threats against France and his warnings about immigration.

The eastern question returns to the table

Trump told reporters that after securing the Iran deal he would turn his attention to the war between Ukraine and Russia.

“We had a very good conversation yesterday with President Zelenskiy and President Putin, and I think maybe we can do something there. I really do. I think they’re both open to it,” he said.

Trump is due to attend a working session with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the summit, while Zelenskiy has said he offered to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin there, only for Putin not to be ready for talks.

Ukraine is seeking more military funding from its allies as Russian attacks on Kyiv continue.

Not all is calm in the French countryside

Beyond the wars in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, the June 15-17 summit is expected to cover global economic imbalances, critical minerals outside China’s supply dominance, and artificial intelligence.

The meeting has also exposed fresh strains between Trump and European leaders. Before arriving in France, Trump said he would “have no choice” but to impose 100% tariffs on French wine unless Paris removed its digital tax on US technology firms.

Macron responded that France would not yield, saying, “Tariffs don’t do anyone any good, especially tariffs between G7 countries.”
