Probe ordered, staff sacked after Jabalpur cruise capsizing left 9 dead

A leisure cruise on Bargi Dam near Jabalpur turned fatal on Thursday evening when the boat capsized during rough weather, leaving nine people dead and 28 rescued. The dead included eight women and a four-year-old boy. The vessel, which had a capacity of around 90, was carrying about 40 passengers when the incident occurred.

Jabalpur Collector Raghvendra Singh said the tragedy appears to have been triggered by a sudden storm and by passengers moving between decks, which affected the boat’s balance.

Sudden storm, passenger movement destabilised vessel, says collector

“When everyone went upstairs, the center of gravity fluctuated,” he said, adding that the vessel began to sway violently before water entered the lower sections. Singh said a weather advisory warning of 40–50 km/h winds had been issued a day earlier, but the cruise still began around 4.30 pm.

Survivors alleged that safety measures came too late. One survivor told The Times of India, “Panic broke out when the cruise started sinking, and only then were life jackets handed out,” while another said there were no visible safety measures during the journey.

Life jackets were stored inside the lower deck, which became crowded as passengers were told to move back down when the weather worsened.

Staff sacked, multi-member panel to investigate incident

Action has already been taken against several personnel linked to the operation. The services of the cruise pilot, a helper, and the ticket counter in-charge were terminated, while the manager of the government-run Maikal Resort and Boat Club was suspended. The state government has also announced compensation for the kin of the deceased.

A departmental investigation has been launched. A committee made up of the Commissioner of Jabalpur Division, a secretary of the Madhya Pradesh government, and the Director General of Home Guards and Civil Defense would handle it. The committee will look at important details such the accident’s causes, adherence to cruise operation regulations, and other pertinent elements.

A standard operating procedure (SOP) for cruise operations will be formulated through the tourism department to avoid such mishaps, the government has said.
