India’s private space sector scripted history as Skyroot Aerospace successfully placed its Vikram-1 rocket into orbit, carrying a special PM Modi Vande Mataram note among its symbolic payloads. The launch marked India’s first successful orbital mission by a privately built launch vehicle and positioned the country among a select group of nations with private orbital launch capability.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the mission as a defining milestone for India’s expanding space ecosystem and said the handwritten message reflected the nation’s aspirations beyond Earth.
PM Modi Vande Mataram note reaches orbit aboard Vikram-1
According to the Financial Times, PM Modi’s Vande Mataram note travelled aboard Vikram-1 as part of a collection of commemorative payloads celebrating India’s scientific achievements. During a congratulatory phone call with the Skyroot Aerospace team, the Prime Minister explained why he chose the message.
Calling it a “Vande Mataram mission”, Modi said the objective was to carry the glory of Mother India to greater heights while inspiring young Indians to embrace innovation and advanced technology.
Skyroot Aerospace CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana informed the Prime Minister that the handwritten card had successfully reached orbit, saying, “Vande Mataram is in orbit.”
The successful mission also demonstrated the growing capabilities of India’s private aerospace industry following years of policy reforms.
Vikram-1 creates a milestone for India’s private space sector
According to the Financial Times, PM Modi’s Vande Mataram note reached space after Vikram-1 completed its final engine burn and injected multiple payloads into a 450-kilometre low Earth orbit.
The seven-storey launch vehicle successfully deployed technology demonstration payloads from Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, DCubed and Skyroot’s own SCOPE experiment.
The achievement makes India the third country in the world to demonstrate private orbital launch capability, strengthening the country’s ambitions to become a major player in the global commercial space industry.
Ahead of the launch, Modi had described the mission as a historic step that showcased the entrepreneurial strength of India’s youth and the benefits of opening the space sector to private participation.

Mission carried science, art and national pride
Beyond PM Modi’s Vande Mataram note, Vikram-1 also carried several symbolic payloads representing India’s scientific legacy.
Among them were handwritten messages from Skyroot engineers, investors, policymakers and supporters, a lab-grown Diamond Lotus developed by Bengaluru-based Cosmos Diamonds, an 18-carat gold rocket and miniature sculptures honouring Vikram Sarabhai, Sir C.V. Raman and former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
Skyroot Aerospace said the engineering data collected during Mission Aagaman will now be analysed to validate navigation, guidance and flight systems before future commercial satellite launches.
The successful mission represents another major step in India’s rapidly expanding private space ecosystem while reinforcing the country’s long-term ambitions in global launch services.
