Andy Flower has ruled himself out of the race to become England’s next Test head coach, choosing instead to continue with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The former England coach said he is happy with his current franchise commitments and does not want to take on the national role at this stage of his career.

Andy Flower confirmed that he spoke with England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) managing director Rob Key about the vacant position. However, after careful consideration, he decided not to pursue the opportunity.

The Zimbabwean coach said his focus remains on franchise cricket, where he is currently involved with RCB in the Indian Premier League and London Spirit in The Hundred. He believes he can contribute more effectively by honouring those commitments rather than returning to international coaching.
Flower has enjoyed considerable success in franchise cricket, including helping RCB establish themselves as one of the strongest teams in the IPL. His decision reflects his preference to continue in the fast-paced franchise environment rather than take charge of England’s red-ball side.
ECB continues search for McCullum’s successor
England are looking for a new Test coach following Brendon McCullum’s departure. Flower was widely considered one of the leading candidates because of his successful previous stint with England between 2009 and 2014.

During that period, England won two Ashes series, reached the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test rankings and lifted the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup. His experience and strong record made him a natural contender for the role.
With Flower no longer in the running, the ECB will continue its search for McCullum’s replacement ahead of England’s upcoming Test assignments. Several experienced coaches are expected to be considered as the board looks to appoint a new leader for the team’s next phase.
For now, Flower remains fully committed to RCB and London Spirit, making it clear that franchise cricket is where he wants to continue his coaching journey.
