Five-time IPL champions CSK is set for a major transition after parting ways with head coach Stephen Fleming, ending one of the longest and most successful coaching stints in IPL history. The former New Zealand captain, who was associated with the franchise for 18 years, has stepped down following a mutual decision with the management. Former India batter Hemang Badani has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the role.

An era in CSK comes to an end

Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming joined the yellow army in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 as a player and became head coach a year later. Under his guidance, CSK established themselves as one of the league’s most successful franchises, winning five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies.

Known for his calm leadership and tactical approach, Fleming played a key role in shaping the team’s culture and maintaining consistency over nearly two decades. However, after three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance, both Fleming and the franchise decided it was the right time to move in a new direction.

CSK head coach role: Who is leading the race?

Former India cricketer Hemang Badani is now the frontrunner to succeed Fleming. The left-handed batter played 40 ODIs for India and has built a strong reputation as a coach through his work in domestic cricket and the IPL.

Although Chennai Super Kings are yet to make an official announcement, Badani is understood to be the preferred choice as the franchise begins planning for the next season. His experience in player development and familiarity with the modern game are believed to have impressed the management.

If the reports became true on Hemang Badani, this will be his second IPL coaching team and also will be IPL’s biggest teams and face the challenge of leading CSK into a new era following the end of Stephen Fleming’s iconic tenure.
