Bangladesh have appointed wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das as their new ODI captain, signalling the start of a fresh chapter in the team’s white-ball journey. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has handed Litton the responsibility of leading the side with the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup firmly in sight. He replaces Mehidy Hasan Miraz and will now captain Bangladesh in both ODIs and T20Is.

Litton Das begins new leadership role

The 31-year-old has been entrusted with leading Bangladesh’s ODI side after previously serving as the team’s T20I captain. He also has prior experience of captaining the ODI team on a stand-in basis, where he led Bangladesh in seven matches and registered three victories.

Litton succeeds Mehidy Hasan Miraz, whose stint as ODI captain ended after Bangladesh’s recent 2-1 series defeat to Zimbabwe. Miraz took over the role in June 2025 and captained the side in 20 ODIs, recording 10 wins, nine defeats and one no-result.

With this appointment, Bangladesh now have separate captains across formats. Litton will lead the team in white-ball cricket, while Nazmul Hossain Shanto remains the captain of the Test side.

BCB eyes long-term success with Litton Das

The BCB’s decision reflects its long-term vision of building a settled team ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. By appointing Litton well in advance, the board hopes to provide stability and allow him enough time to shape the squad for the global event.

One of Bangladesh’s most experienced cricketers, Litton has represented the country in more than 100 ODIs and is regarded as a key figure in the batting line-up. His experience, calm approach and understanding of the white-ball game made him the preferred choice for the leadership role.
