Brazil’s World Cup campaign begins with draw against Morocco

Brazil began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Morocco in a closely contested Group C match at MetLife Stadium. The five-time world champions entered the tournament as one of the favourites but were unable to secure all three points against a determined Moroccan side.

Morocco strikes first

Morocco started brightly and looked confident from the opening whistle. Their disciplined defending and quick attacks kept Brazil under pressure throughout the first half. The breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari finished a well-worked move to put Morocco ahead.

The African side continued to frustrate Brazil with their compact shape and energetic pressing. Brazil struggled to create clear chances and found it difficult to control possession in midfield. Morocco’s organised approach allowed them to maintain their lead and keep the Brazilian attack quiet for long periods.

Vinicius brings Brazil back

Brazil found their equaliser through Vinicius Junior in the 32nd minute. The forward produced a moment of quality to level the score and give his team a much-needed boost before halftime.

The second half saw both teams push for a winner. Brazil enjoyed more possession and created opportunities, but Morocco remained solid at the back and continued to threaten on the counterattack. Neither side could find the decisive goal despite several promising attacks.

The draw earned Morocco a valuable point and highlighted their ability to compete with one of football’s traditional powerhouses. For Brazil, the result served as a reminder that there are areas to improve as the tournament progresses.

With one match completed in Group C, the race for qualification remains wide open. Morocco will take confidence from their strong display, while Brazil will look to sharpen their performances in the upcoming fixtures as they continue their pursuit of a sixth World Cup title.

The result leaves both teams with a point and sets up an intriguing battle for progression from the group stage in the weeks ahead.
