FIFA has begun disciplinary proceedings against Argentina following the disorder that erupted after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in New York. Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina face assault charges

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has been charged with three counts of assault following his involvement in the confrontation after the final whistle.

Television footage showed Paredes grabbing Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat before pushing him to the ground. He was also seen wrestling midfielder Gavi during the heated exchange that followed Spain’s title-winning victory.

Defender Nahuel Molina has been charged with two counts of assault after allegedly punching Spain captain Rodri during the same incident.

According to the footage, Molina’s punch triggered the wider confrontation, with Garcia stepping in to defend Rodri before more players became involved.

Roberto Ayala and other players also under investigation

Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala has also been charged with assault. Video footage appeared to show the former defender confronting Spain midfielder Dani Olmo before allegedly striking him during the post-match confrontation.

In addition, Molina and Thiago Almada have each been charged with unsporting behaviour. Spain midfielder Gavi has also received the same charge in relation to the incident.

FIFA investigates Falkland Islands banner

Separate disciplinary proceedings have also been opened against the Argentine Football Association over a banner displayed after the team’s 2-1 semifinal win against England. The banner read, “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Malvinas are Argentine”).

Argentina refers to the Falkland Islands as the Islas Malvinas. The islands were invaded by Argentina in 1982 under the country’s military government, leading to a 10-week conflict that ended with a British victory.

The display prompted British government officials to call for an investigation. FIFA has charged the Argentine federation with “using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature.”

FIFA awaits responses before final decision

FIFA confirmed that every individual named in the disciplinary process, along with the Argentine Football Association, has been given an opportunity to respond to the allegations.
