Argentina’s disappointing end to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been overshadowed by a growing disciplinary controversy after FIFA charges Argentina over a series of incidents involving players, coaching staff and supporters. FIFA charges Argentina over final brawl and player conduct
The biggest reason behind FIFA charging Argentina is the heated altercation that erupted moments after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final.
Midfielder Leandro Paredes faces the most serious allegations after being charged with three counts of assault following his confrontation with Spain’s Gavi. Defender Nahuel Molina has also been charged with assault, while assistant coach Roberto Ayala faces similar accusations over his alleged involvement in the incident.
The organisation has additionally charged Molina, Paredes, Spain’s Gavi and Argentina’s Thiago Almada with unsporting behaviour during the post-match scuffle.
If found guilty, Paredes could face a lengthy suspension, while Molina and Ayala may receive match bans or restrictions from football-related activities.

Political banner and fan behaviour also under investigation
Beyond the on-field incidents, the charges also include alleged breaches involving political messaging and supporter conduct.
After defeating England in the semifinal, several Argentine players displayed a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” referring to the Falkland Islands. FIFA has charged the AFA for using a sporting event for a political demonstration, citing regulations that prohibit political displays during international competitions.
The governing body has also launched disciplinary proceedings over discriminatory chants and gestures by Argentine supporters. In addition, several cases involving objects being thrown by fans during multiple World Cup matches are under review.
These allegations have attracted international attention, with criticism directed at fan behaviour throughout the tournament.
