After a long wait and repeated demands, Google has started rolling out its speedometer feature for Google Maps on Android Auto, which would allow drivers to view their current speed and speed limits directly on their vehicle’s display.
The feature is yet to receive a full public release and is available to a limited number of users.

A new experience
NDTV reported that the feature rollout was first spotted by Android Auto beta testers, with initial reports emerging from Reddit, including a user based in Canada.
The speedometer was seen running on beta version 26.29.02.946673643 of Google maps.
The speedometer displays real-time driving speed on the Android Auto screen and when navigation is active, it shows both the current speed and the speed limit for the road being travelled.
If the navigation is not enabled, only the current speed is shown. Reports suggest that the feature appears in full-screen mode and is also visible in the Coolwalk, multi-pane layout, which would give drivers easier access while using other Android Auto features.
Aim of the feature
The feature is created to improve driving convenience by allowing users to monitor their speed without looking at the vehicle’s dashboard. Google is expected to gradually expand the rollout.
It would help to monitor real-time speed, record travel routes, analyse journeys, and track movements while driving.
