What is the Secure America Act? All about Trump’s major immigration funding law

President Donald Trump signed the Secure America Act on Wednesday. The new law is being touted as a major immigration and border security measure that provides nearly $70 billion in funding for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) until 2029, Hindustan Times reported.

The legislation, one of the Trump administration’s key policy measures, was approved by the House of Representatives on Tuesday by a narrow 214-212 vote. Republican leaders said the law is aimed at strengthening border enforcement and increasing deportations. It is also being said to ensure long-term funding for federal immigration agencies.

What is the Secure America Act?

The Secure America Act allocates about $38 billion to ICE and $26 billion to Customs and Border Protection. Another $5 billion has been earmarked for emergency and unforeseen expenses.

The law funds the hiring of additional agents and the expansion of detention and deportation operations. It will also be put into effect for upgrades to border security infrastructure. It also guarantees funding for both agencies until the end of Trump’s current term, shielding them from future budget battles in Congress, as per HT.

Supporters of the law say it will help the administration implement its immigration agenda and provide agencies with resources for large-scale enforcement operations.

Why has the law sparked controversy?

Democrats opposed the legislation, arguing that it significantly increases funding without adding new oversight measures or reforms.

Critics said the bill does not include additional accountability mechanisms for ICE and Border Patrol operations. Some lawmakers also raised concerns about the use of force by federal agents and the absence of new civil liberties protections.

Senator Maria Cantwell questioned the lack of safeguards during debate on the legislation, asking, “What are we going to do about this use of force?”

Despite the opposition, Republicans described the law as a major victory for border security and immigration enforcement, while Democrats warned that it grants broad new resources to agencies without corresponding checks and balances.
