After spells of rain lashed Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal on Monday, wet weather is expected to continue on July 21. With three political programmes scheduled in different parts of Kolkata today, many residents are wondering whether rain will disrupt travel.

According to the latest update from the Alipore Meteorological Department, rainfall activity is likely to increase across Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal on Tuesday. Isolated heavy rain is also expected in coastal and adjoining districts. Several parts of North Bengal are likely to receive heavy rainfall as well.

Kolkata weather today

The Alipore Meteorological Department said Kolkata is expected to remain under a cloudy sky on Tuesday.

Light rain has already been reported from the city and nearby areas since morning. Similar conditions are expected to continue through the day, with intermittent light to moderate rainfall likely at different times.

On Monday, Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 31.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 26.5 degrees Celsius.

For Tuesday, the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may remain close to 27 degrees Celsius.

Rain forecast for South Bengal

The weather office said the monsoon trough currently extends from Ranchi through Digha to the northwest Bay of Bengal. In addition, a cyclonic circulation is present over Jharkhand and Gangetic South Bengal.

Under its influence, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Nadia on Tuesday. Similar weather conditions are expected to continue until Thursday.

Rainfall is likely to become more widespread and intense over the coastal districts of South Bengal on Wednesday and Thursday. Other districts may witness scattered light to moderate showers.

The weather department has also forecast gusty winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph along with the rain.

North Bengal rain update

Several districts of North Bengal are likely to receive heavy rainfall on Tuesday, the weather office said.

The spell of rain is expected to continue through Wednesday. Parts of Jalpaiguri may witness heavy rainfall on Wednesday.

Flood and landslide concerns in North Bengal

The weather department has warned that persistent rainfall could lead to a rise in the water levels of rivers across North Bengal.

Low-lying areas may face the risk of flooding. There is also a possibility of landslides in the hilly districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
