Kolkata woke up to persistent rain and gusty winds on Friday after overnight showers disrupted normal life across South Bengal, triggering waterlogging in several areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intermittent rainfall through the day, with light to heavy showers likely across southern districts, while North Bengal is also expected to witness light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms.
South Bengal to witness rain through Friday
According to the IMD, the sky will remain overcast across South Bengal throughout the day. Rain that began after midnight has continued in Kolkata and many other districts and is expected to persist until around noon.

While rainfall intensity is likely to ease later in the afternoon, the weather office has not ruled out a few more spells of showers during the rest of the day. Coastal districts may also receive one or two spells of heavy rain.
A yellow alert has been issued until noon for several districts due to the possibility of heavy rainfall. These include North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman and Nadia.
The IMD has also indicated that rainfall activity is expected to reduce from Saturday onward. No heavy rainfall is currently forecast across South Bengal until Tuesday.
Kolkata weather forecast
Kolkata is expected to experience continuous light to moderate rain until the afternoon on Friday. Weather conditions are likely to improve later in the day as the rain gradually weakens and the sky becomes partly clearer.
The IMD has further said that no significant rainfall is expected in Kolkata or other parts of South Bengal during the weekend.
North Bengal weather update
For Friday and Saturday, North Bengal is expected to remain mostly cloudy, with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms at isolated places.

A yellow alert has been issued for Cooch Behar, Malda, Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur. However, the weather department has stated that heavy rainfall is not expected anywhere in North Bengal during these two days.
Rainfall likely to increase from Sunday
Weather conditions are expected to change from Sunday onward.
According to the IMD forecast, rainfall activity is likely to intensify across North Bengal from Sunday through Tuesday night. Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar could witness isolated spells of heavy rain, and an orange alert may be issued for these districts if conditions develop as forecast.
