Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election, incidents of post-poll violence have been reported in various parts of the state. Instances of vandalism have surfaced, and tensions have been observed in multiple regions. While BJP leaders have publicly condemned the violence and stated that serious action will be taken against any individuals involved, disturbances have disrupted normal life in certain areas. Reports have emerged of threats and confrontations.
In a recent incident, clashes occurred at Rajabazar Science College of Calcutta University. According to Biswajit Roy, state secretary of AIDSO, ABVP supporters allegedly committed violence after the election results were announced.

He claimed that DSO members were attacked while attempting to protect the campus’s democratic environment, and alleged that banners and festoons were torn down in the process.
On the evening of May 6, ABVP West Bengal released a video statement denying involvement in the recent campus violence. The organization alleged that individuals linked to the Trinamool Congress, who allegedly switched affiliations after May 4, were responsible for the disruptive acts. ABVP urged authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly to identify the actual perpetrators.
What message did ABVP give to their workers?
Dr. Neelkantha Bhattacharya, the Pradesh Sampadak of ABVP West Bengal, addressed the public via a Facebook video. He alleged that some individuals, whom he claimed had previously been affiliated with the Left or the TMC, were now posing as nationalists and were involved in attacking universities.
Bhattacharya further emphasised that the ABVP does not condone such activities and stated that any individual participating in violence will face strict action.

They shared a press release and alleged that “Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) strongly condemns the cowardly attack on the karyakartas of the ABVP Calcutta University Unit by miscreants linked to AIDSO and SFI.”
Meanwhile the ABVP Calcutta University unit has alleged that its members were attacked by individuals associated with SFI and AIDSO following a courtesy visit to the campus on Tuesday. According to ABVP, the assault involved rods and lathis. The organisation dismissed allegations against its members as “politically motivated” and “baseless.”
