Suvendu Adhikari’s PA shot dead near Kolkata in post poll violence

Tensions have escalated sharply in West Bengal following the killing of Chandranath Rath, personal aide to senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, in what is being viewed as part of a wave of post-poll unrest. The incident took place in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas, just two days after the Assembly election results that reshaped the state’s political landscape.

Shooting raises fresh security concerns

According to initial reports, the victim named Chandranath Rath was identified as Adhikari’s personal assistant, was shot dead under circumstances that point to targeted violence. The killing has added to a series of disturbing incidents reported from different parts of the state since the election outcome, raising questions over law and order in the immediate aftermath of a high-stakes political contest.

Authorities are yet to release detailed findings, but the timing of the incident has intensified scrutiny, with political leaders and observers linking it to heightened tensions on the ground.

Landslide verdict followed by unrest

The violence comes on the heels of a historic mandate that saw the Bharatiya Janata Party secure a decisive majority in West Bengal for the first time. The party, led in the state by Suvendu Adhikari, won over 200 seats, dramatically altering the balance of power.

Adhikari himself retained his stronghold in Nandigram and also emerged victorious in Bhabanipur, defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The scale of the victory has intensified political rivalries, with both sides trading allegations in the aftermath.

Political reactions and allegations

The Trinamool Congress leadership has questioned the legitimacy of the results, alleging irregularities and claiming that a significant number of seats were “stolen”. Mamata Banerjee has publicly rejected the verdict, stating she will not step down and alleging manipulation of voting processes.

Against this backdrop, the killing in Madhyamgram underscores the fragile situation on the ground. Calls for restraint have grown louder, with concerns that continued violence could further destabilise the state in a politically sensitive period.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, even as the focus shifts to restoring calm and ensuring accountability in the days ahead.
