‘$60 million and tens of thousands of hours of labor’: Court filing reveals scale of Trump’s White House UFC event

A federal judge on Friday declined to block President Donald Trump’s planned UFC event at the White House, clearing the way for the mixed martial arts showcase to go ahead on Sunday.

The event, billed as “UFC Freedom 250,” is set to be held on the South Lawn and timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of America’s founding and Trump’s 80th birthday.

Judge Amit Mehta ruled that the challengers had not shown they were directly harmed and had waited too long to sue.

Cost and scale of the operation

Court filings have also laid out the scale of the operation behind the event.

According to Time, “well over $60 million and tens of thousands of hours of labor have been expended” in preparation for the fights. More than seven federal agencies, hundreds of staff working onsite daily and at least $60 million have been involved in the preparations, with the money coming from the UFC and groups affiliated with it.

The filing described the event as “a collaboration between the White House, executive agencies,” and the UFC.

Venue, crowd and logistics

The logistics are unusual even by Washington standards.

The bouts will be staged inside a 92-foot-tall, claw-like structure on the South Lawn, with the octagonal cage at its center. The administration said more than 4,000 spectators are expected to attend the event in person.

Another 120,000 people are expected to watch from the nearby Ellipse, where an online lottery was used to distribute tickets.

The installation began on May 20 and involved screening 20 to 30 trucks of equipment each day.

Legal challenge and court battle

The legal fight over the event has turned on more than just the spectacle itself. Plaintiffs from the nonprofit Public Integrity Project argued that the administration exceeded its authority by allowing a privately organized, for-profit sporting event on federal land and said the arena should not be built without congressional authorization.

They called the event “deeply corrupt,” while their lawyers told the court, “This isn’t a case about a sporting event, it’s about corruption, as a handful of people and companies stand to profit from our public monuments.”

The White House rejected the lawsuit as untimely and frivolous, while the judge found that the challengers had not met the standard for blocking the event.
