Suriya’s Karuppu crosses ₹200 crore worldwide, becomes Tamil cinema’s latest blockbuster

Suriya’s latest release Karuppu is continuing its strong box office run, crossing major milestones within days of release. Directed by RJ Balaji, the fantasy action drama has now reportedly grossed over ₹200 crore worldwide, making it one of the biggest Tamil hits of 2026.

The film has also become the first Tamil movie in the last nine months to collect more than ₹100 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. According to reports, the last Tamil film to achieve this feat was Coolie starring Rajinikanth, which released in August last year.

A major comeback for Suriya

The success of Karuppu is being viewed as a major comeback moment for Suriya after a mixed phase at the box office in recent years. Reports stated that the film crossed ₹100 crore net in India within its first week and quickly emerged as the actor’s highest-grossing film worldwide.

The Hindustan Times reports suggest that the Tamil version has contributed the majority of the collections, while the Telugu dubbed version Veerabhadrudu has also performed decently in theatres. Overseas collections reportedly crossed ₹60 crore, helping the film comfortably enter the ₹200 crore club globally.

Despite opening to mixed reviews, the film has maintained strong audience turnout, especially across Tamil Nadu. Many viewers praised the film’s emotional core, fantasy elements, and Suriya’s performance as one of the key reasons behind its success.

What is Karuppu about

Karuppu tells the story of guardian deity Vettai Karuppu, who disguises himself as a lawyer named Saravanan to deliver justice to people in distress. The film combines mythology, fantasy, action, and emotional drama.

Along with Suriya, the film stars Trisha Krishnan and RJ Balaji in major roles. Supporting performances by Indrans, Swasika, Sshivada, and Natty Subramaniam have also received attention from audiences. Music for the film has been composed by Sai Abhyankkar.

Internet celebrates the box office run

The film’s performance has sparked strong reactions on X, with fans celebrating Suriya’s return to blockbuster territory. Discussions across social media and Reddit highlighted how Karuppu managed to revive excitement around Tamil theatrical releases after a relatively slow period at the box office.

According to the reports of Hindustan Times, the collections still holding steady in theatres, the analysts expect Karuppu to continue its successful run in the coming days.
