Outside the Parliament complex on Friday, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was asked to respond to a press conference held by relatives of Delhi Police personnel injured during the July 20 clashes linked to student protests in New Delhi.

The human cost
The family members of an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), a Sub-Inspector (SI), and other Delhi Police personnel addressed the press and said several officers were still receiving treatment.
The wife of an injured ACP described the emotional impact on her family after he returned home injured on the night of July 20. The daughter of an injured sub-Inspector said her father had been assaulted during the protest and was later admitted to the hospital.
She alleged that he had been injured by a mob near the stage at Jantar Mantar and remained unconscious for hours.
Another relative argued that the event was not a genuine student protest, saying, “This was not a student protest,” and claimed that disruptive elements had tried to sabotage it.

Gandhi seeks independent probe into police action
Mr. Gandhi had, a day earlier, demanded an independent, Supreme Court-monitored, high-powered committee to probe the alleged police action against students during the July 20 protest at Jantar Mantar.
Via X, he said, “Students deserve justice,” and urged a fair investigation into the alleged brutality against protesters. He also accused the Centre of intimidating student protesters, while maintaining that an independent inquiry was necessary.
The allegations and counter-allegations have deepened the political split over the handling of the protest. Both sides are framing the event in sharply different terms.
