Giribala Singh arrested after high court quashes bail in Twisha Sharma case

Retired judge Giribala Singh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday afternoon in Bhopal in connection with the death case of her daughter-in-law, Twisha Sharma.

The arrest came a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court set aside the anticipatory bail that had been granted to her in the case. According to the HT report, Twisha was found dead on May 12, an FIR was lodged on May 15, and Samarth Singh, Giribala’s son, continues to remain in CBI custody.

The bail order meets its match

The high court’s order was passed late on Wednesday by Justice Devanarayan Mishra, who cited repeated allegations, lack of cooperation in the investigation, the serious nature of the offence and the trial court’s failure to properly examine evidence while overturning the bail order.

The bench quashed the anticipatory bail granted by the 10th Additional Sessions Judge, Bhopal, in connection with offences under Sections 80(2), 85 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.

Twisha’s body was found on May 12, while the FIR was filed three days later. On the same day, the Bhopal trial court had granted interim bail to her mother-in-law, even as the investigation moved ahead with Samarth Singh in CBI custody. The high court’s intervention shifted the legal position sharply within 24 hours, paving the way for Giribala Singh’s arrest.

After the high court’s decision, Twisha Sharma’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, expressed gratitude to the judiciary and said, “This has sent a deeply positive message across society.” He also said he had faith in the judicial process and the CBI, adding that he believed the agency would uncover the complete truth. The family’s response underlines the continuing public attention around the case as the investigation remains under CBI scrutiny.
