The goal was enough to separate the two teams in a contest where Scotland enjoyed the majority of possession and looked the more threatening side. McGinn’s strike also entered the history books, helping Scotland secure their first World Cup victory since defeating Sweden at Italia 1990.
Scotland hold firm as Haiti threaten comeback
Haiti, playing in their first World Cup since 1974, refused to back down and pushed for an equaliser in the second half. The Caribbean side showed energy and pace in attack, creating a few nervy moments for the Scottish defence.

However, Scotland remained disciplined at the back and restricted Haiti to limited clear-cut chances. Goalkeeper Angus Gunn was rarely called into serious action as the Scots successfully protected their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The victory gives Scotland an early boost in the race for the knockout rounds and puts them in a strong position heading into their next Group C fixture against Morocco. Haiti, meanwhile, will need a positive result against Brazil to keep their qualification hopes alive.
With three points already on the board, Scotland’s return to the World Cup stage could hardly have begun in a better fashion.
