The mountaineering world is mourning the loss of Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja after the Broad Peak avalanche claimed the life of one of the greatest high-altitude climbers of all time. Purja was leading an expedition on Broad Peak in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir when an avalanche struck on Thursday, bringing an extraordinary climbing career to a tragic end.
Known for repeatedly pushing the limits of human endurance, Nimsdai inspired millions through his remarkable achievements on the world’s highest mountains and his relentless pursuit of excellence.
Nimsdai Broad Peak avalanche ends legendary climbing career
Nimsdai’s death in the Broad Peak avalanche occurred while Purja was guiding an expedition on Broad Peak, one of the world’s highest mountains. Rescue efforts were launched following the avalanche, but the veteran climber could not be saved.
His death comes less than a year after he continued adding to his already unmatched record in high-altitude mountaineering. On September 29, 2025, Purja successfully summited Mount Manaslu, taking his tally to 52 ascents of peaks above 8,000 metres.
Among those climbs were 24 ascents completed without supplemental oxygen, the highest number ever achieved by any climber.

A career that transformed modern mountaineering
Few climbers have influenced mountaineering like Nimsdai. Nimsdai’s death in the Broad Peak avalanche has brought renewed attention to a career filled with historic milestones.
His landmark achievement came in 2019 through Project Possible, when he climbed all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in just six months and six days, smashing the previous record and earning worldwide recognition.
Purja also played a pivotal role in the historic first winter ascent of K2 in 2021 as part of an all-Nepali team, completing the climb without supplemental oxygen.
His career included nine successful Everest summits, four ascents of K2, 18 Guinness World Records and multiple speed records for climbing combinations of the world’s tallest peaks.
