Heavy rain and a sudden cloudburst near Chatroo threw life out of gear across the Chenab Valley early Saturday.
Flash floods followed, and authorities were forced to shut schools in Kishtwar, Doda and Ramban districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
What happened
Officials said the cloudburst hit around 2:30 am, sending a sudden rush of water through the area. Parts of the main market were buried under mud, slush and boulders.

The flooding also blocked the Kishtwar Chatroo Sinthan national highway, badly affecting movement in the region, according to media reports.
No lives were lost, but the damage was still considerable. Several shops and homes were flooded, and at least two vehicles parked near a local stream were swept away by the force of the water.
Officials are now assessing the full extent of the losses.
Compensation for affected traders
Union minister Jitendra Singh said shopkeepers and business owners who suffered losses would get compensation as per government relief norms. He said he had spoken to the district administration right after the incident to take stock of the situation.

The minister also spoke about the disaster preparedness steps taken after the deadly Chasoti cloudburst last year, which had killed 63 people, most of them pilgrims.
He said early warning systems have since been set up in Kishtwar and Machail, along with an automatic weather station in the Padder area, to help improve forecasting and response during extreme weather.
Schools shut as a precaution
As a safety measure, all government and private schools in Kishtwar were ordered to stay shut for the day because of heavy rain, slippery roads and the danger of landslides or falling rocks.

Doda and Ramban districts followed suit, with schools told to hold classes online instead.
The cloudburst and the rain that followed disrupted normal life across the Chenab Valley, damaging property and halting transport, even though officials confirmed there was no loss of life.
