Monsoon brings cloudy skies, frequent showers and a cosy indoor mood. However, the season can also make homes appear darker and less lively. While the weather plays a role, certain interior choices can unintentionally add to the dullness.

Interior designer Punam Kalra, creative director of I’m the Centre for Applied Arts, pointed out that some decor decisions can affect how a space feels during the rainy season. According to her, the difference between a cosy home and a cold-looking one often depends on thoughtful choices.

“Gloomy interiors aren’t essentially bad. But they can be if one seeks a different mood, one that keeps them cheerful and full of life. Such an environment can be created when every choice is made with intent,” she said.

During monsoon, when people spend more time indoors and natural light becomes limited, small decor changes can help create a warmer atmosphere. Here are four common mistakes that may be making your home look dull.

Using heavy curtains and bulky rugs

Thick drapes and heavy floor coverings can make rooms appear visually crowded, especially when sunlight is already limited. Experts suggest choosing lighter fabrics such as sheer cotton, lacework, broderie or crushed linen curtains that allow more light inside.

Flatwoven rugs can also make spaces feel lighter compared to thick, full-looped designs. Chenille rugs with patterns like florals, stripes or abstract designs can work well in humid weather.

Depending only on ambient lighting

A single ceiling light may not be enough to brighten a dim room during monsoon. Layered lighting can help distribute brightness across different corners.

Table lamps, floor lamps, wall sconces and track lights can add different levels of illumination while making the room feel more energetic.

Choosing overly dark colours

Dark shades may look dramatic under bright sunlight but can make monsoon interiors feel smaller and heavier. Excessive use of black, faded tones like dusty rust or cool shades such as deep blues and purples can affect the overall mood of a room.

Warmer colours, including jewel tones and softer shades like peach, mustard and butter yellow, can add more vibrancy.

Ignoring furniture maintenance

Old varnish, faded paint and worn-out finishes can silently impact the appearance of a space. Regular furniture treatments and small upgrades can help maintain a fresher look.

With a few intentional changes, homes can feel brighter and more comfortable even during gloomy monsoon days.
