Indian students seeking an international degree may soon have another option closer to home. The UK’s University of Liverpool has received formal approval to establish a branch campus in Bengaluru, becoming one of the latest foreign institutions to enter India’s higher education landscape.
The approval was granted by the Ministry of Education, which handed over a Letter of Approval to the university, allowing it to begin operations in Karnataka’s capital.
The development is being viewed as another significant step in India’s push to attract globally reputed universities under reforms introduced through the National Education Policy and the UGC’s framework for foreign higher education institutions.
What courses will be offered?
According to NDTV, the Bengaluru campus is expected to offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across several high-demand disciplines.
Students will be able to enrol in courses including business management, computer science, game design, finance and biomedical sciences. University officials have also indicated that additional academic programmes are likely to be introduced in the coming years as the campus expands.
The institution completed its academic, infrastructure and regulatory preparations over the past year after receiving a Letter of Intent from the University Grants Commission in May 2025.
Following an assessment of its readiness and compliance with regulatory requirements, the UGC issued the final approval enabling the university to establish its Indian campus.

Boost for India-UK education ties
According to NDTV, the government said the move aligns with its broader objective of internationalising higher education and increasing access to globally recognised academic institutions within India.
Education cooperation remains an important pillar of relations between India and the United Kingdom, with policymakers hoping such initiatives will strengthen academic collaboration, student mobility and research partnerships between the two countries.
Officials also noted that the arrival of leading international universities could reduce the need for some students to travel abroad while still allowing them to access globally recognised qualifications.

Founded in 1881, the University of Liverpool is widely recognised for its research output and academic reputation. The university is considered one of the UK’s established higher education institutions and features in several international university rankings.
The Ministry of Education said the decision to establish a campus in India reflects the increasing attractiveness of the country’s higher education sector and the opportunities created by recent regulatory reforms.
